I discovered this stone in our garden this morning. It was covered with moss. When I tidied it up I found this stone given to me many years ago by a Sculptor near Auchterarder. Wonder if he remembers it? ( about 30 cms.)

I have been working on this wall for quite a while . Various folk have helped me, Steve, Martin Neil, Cass the client and his grandson Magnus. The first photo show the build about half way. The second some of the large boulders which we used at the base to prevent slippage down the steep hill . The last  photo shows the finished job at the beginning of August 2019.

Michael Echerman posted this interesting photo of a wall which is enhanced by the plants.  It looks amazingly like wood.

 This is the Trullo that we are going to restore. If you are interested in going with us to Italy in September to work on stone roof systems, please let her know. The instructors and helpers are all volunteers. Just think of it as a working vacation. The very best way to really know a country is to work in it.

Inspiration

Since childhood this bridge has amazed me mainly because I have seen a tractor and trailor going over what looks like a very fragile arch of stones.  It was only when I started drystone walling in my mid 40s that I realised that it was possible for me to do something very similar and now I have built several bridges with a grassy track over them.  Thus achieving a lifetime ambition.

Walls on the Landman farm in Ontario Canada 1

This Irish style Fidein wall was built by a group of students under the direction of Patrick McAfee. Unusally the smaller rocks are below the larger which are set upright rather than laid flat. This type of wall can last for hundreds of yaears.

Delightful Present

This model house was built by folk in our town. It was a 90th birthday present to a lady who had lived in the original almost all of her life.

The Black House was built several years ago in Canada, on the Landman farm during a  Dry Stone Festival. At the time the main plant was Sedum. Now several species are doing well and these Kids seem to be having a great time.

Building in Croatia

I was delighted to see this photo of a drystone building sent by my friend Boris Cok.  This structure is in Croatia and is a corbelled building very similar to the Trulli found in the South of Italy.

Sometimes the coffee shop calls.

Jubilee Cairn

This delightful painting was a Christmas present from my Daughter .It shows the Cairn which William Crooks Cassidy and I built at Balmoral to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Double Copes

Last year with a training group I used double copes for the first time .On the site there were no animals and the owners were planning to raise the wall in the future. It worked very well and I was pleased to try something new after so many years following the standard system.

A Most Unusual Cairn

During one of the great festivals of stone in Canada . The younger folk there had fun building with butter nut squashes while the rest of us were using rocks. Several members of the Landman family participated in the construction of this Cairn, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the weekend.

A Great Idea

This climbing structure was set up in our local park last summer. The children have had great pleasure from going up and down these cast rocks. The surface below is quite spongy so takes any falls without danger. It seems to me that real rocks could be used in this way , the cost would probably be much less. The height is about 2 meters and does require foot holds.

Restored Tower Base in Sharjah

This photo of a restored Tower Base was taken by archaeologist Michele Ziolkowski when visiting Sharjah Emirate. The building was at the Wadi il-Hilu and dates from the Umm an-Nar period. ( Bronze Age 2600- 2000 BC. )
